Interview: The new Care@Home platform
Toward the upcoming launch of Care@Home platform, we interviewed Avi Ben-David, Business Development Director for Essence Smartcare
Avi joined Essence in late 2010 bringing more than 10 years of Telecommunication networking & services experience. Joining Essence as a Presales Manager helping to promote the new and emerging IoT services for Telecom companies. Avi later joined the business development team where he had a key role in building, shaping and promoting the new Smart Care product and service offerings.
Avi, let’s start with why you decided to join Essence and then work in the elderly care area?
Supporting the elderly, especially those who are aging alone, has always been a blessed mission in my eyes. Harnessing new and smart technology for the sake of enabling their independence and care in their own homes has been a key driver for me while working for Essence.
Can you explain the concept of the Care@Home platform?
The Care@Home overview is a unique platform that offers a complete range of professional and semi-professional Telecare services.
For example, our innovative ‘Care@Home Pro’ service concept is all about seamless passive monitoring. The heart and brain of Care@Home is a smart analytics algorithm that ‘learns’ the elder’s behavioral routines and alerts when deviations occur. A number of passive wireless sensors are deployed at the elder’s home , constantly communicating the captured activity data with the cloud where the smart engine processes this data into behavioral patterns. Telecare providers, via Care@Home systems, assist elderly persons with a seamless protection suite that automatically alerts due events in the home that would indicate possible falls, illness progression and many other such scenarios.
Why do you think the elderly population needs this kind of solution while panic button solutions (PERS / Social Alarm) have existed for long time?
As you said, the panic button solution has existed for over 40 years and it is highly promoted by governments due to its rather low price. However, those solutions demand the elderly person to press a button, as this is the only trigger from which the Telecare provider is able to respond. But what about scenarios in which pressing a button is not an option? In fact, some statistics suggest that up to 80% of the time, the panic buttons are not used for this reason and other reasons such as shame and not wanting to bother people. The Essence Care@Home provides an emphasis on a more accurate monitoring and prevention of emergency and deteriorating health conditions that is well demonstrated using our newly offered ‘Care@Home Family’ solution.
What is Care@Home Family?
‘Care@Home Family’ is another advanced monitoring service that offers better interaction between family members and those they look after.
The solution allows children of senior to extract viable daily information by allowing the family member to set certain rules that will alert them in real time if a certain parameter has not been met.
Examples of this are not waking up on time, regular eating, leaving the house, out of home durations and many more.

What are the advantages of this solution?
The solution holds a new approach in understanding and meeting the family members needs and is designed with specific features such as:
- Easy installation starting with just a main communication unit and 3 wireless sensors.
- Friendly & intuitive user interface supported by smartphones, tablets and PCs with strict privacy rules.
- It overcomes the “shyness effect” – older people tend not to tell when something is wrong so as not to become a burden, so the Care@Home senses and reports issues automatically.
- It replaces pangs of conscience at not being involved with an essential peace of mind (for the concerned relatives and love ones).
Who are this product’s target customers?
The product was designed for the non-professional caregivers of elderly individuals (i.e. family members).This could mean those ones who live great distances from their loved ones and wish to take a more active role in their care and increase the day to day feeling of safety.
From your experience with service providers in the healthcare, what are they lacking in the elderly care market and how are you helping them?
Most of the available solutions to date narrows the care eco-system and lacks the ability to offer proactive care services resulting from the fact that the main service is given only upon pushing a button.
The Care@Home platform offers new technology and service concepts that help centralize large amounts of data resulting that is converted into behavioral information which sheds more light on our understanding of behavioral trends and expands the care eco-system by enabling new users to take an active role.
I believe this is the perfect solution for a new generation of telecare services that empowers both the healthcare service providers and family member by giving them 21st century tools to better manage and improve the wellbeing of the elderly community.
